Journal
Prior to reading, write down everything you know about the topic in your journal. Preview the vocabulary words, and write down where you think you have heard them before. Based on what you remember, what do the words most likely mean? Math vocabulary often has everyday meaning different than its meaning in math. Record what you think the math meaning is based on the word's everyday meaning.
Think, Pair, Share
Before reading, think about what you already know about the topic. Pair up with a partner, and share your ideas. How are your partner's ideas the same or different from your own? What can you expect to learn from the reading?

BEFORE READING

List, Group, Label
To help make meaning from the words in a text, first brainstorm a list of all words you think may be related to your reading topic. Combine your list with words thought of by your peers, and work together to group the words into various categories. Label the categories in a way that explains how the words are related.
