AFTER READING

Four-Square Summary
After reading, write down a summary of what you read on a sticky note. Next, form a group with three peers (group of four), and take turns reading your summaries to the group. Once everyone has shared, combine the most important parts of each summary to make a final summary statement. Reread your final summary, and think about what you have learned.
Discuss
When you have finished reading, discuss what you have read with a partner or group. Share with each other what you learned, what you found most interesting, and what questions you still have. Talk about your experience- was the reading easy-breezy or challenging? Did any parts of the reading surprise you? Discuss how you will use what you have read in the future. The discussion link above contains "discussion seeds" that you can use to help your discussion get started.
Exit Slips
At the end of class (or when you finish reading at home), write down your overall response to the reading. You may include thoughts such as
  • I want to learn more about...
  • I need more explanation on...
  • The most important thing I learned today...
  • I was most surprised by...
  • I am still confused about...
Use these thoughts to make an action plan for using what you have read. Do you need to do more research? Should you find time to talk with your teacher or a peer? Decide what your next steps should be, then act!
